They help Riley function everyday, and live her life the best possible way. We then meet her emotions, Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear who have their own adventures and misadventures when Riley and her family move to San Francisco. Inside Out tells the story of an 11-year-old girl, Riley, and the emotions inside of her. The trademark Pixar magic is still very much present in Inside Out, with the film’s amazing animation, smart humor, and original concept, complete with a touching story line (Get your tissues ready–the film has its share of moments that give so much feels.). As usual, Pixar does not disappoint. Indeed, even for a studio as accomplished as this, I think Inside Out achieves something special. We caught the purple carpet premiere of Disney-Pixar’s latest offering, Inside Out, when filmmakers Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen visited our country early this month for the movie’s tour, and we enjoyed the film.

Go see Inside Out. Old and young alike will find something to love. Sequels have their place, but Inside Out feels just right as a fully contained story.

And although I loved to see the emotions at play in the heads of characters other than Riley-from her parents to a bevy of side characters and animals during the credits-I hope this remains a one-off story. The film may not be as enduring or iconic as Toy Story in the end. What a lovely example of what this film sets out to teach. She was inconsolable, try as her little companions might to cheer her. Later, however, when something goes suddenly very wrong for Joy, the little girl burst into tears. ("Was that funny?" she'd ask her companions, giggling uncertainly, guffawing at the genuinely funny bits.) She was Joy made manifest. One little girl in the audience sitting behind us laughed and giggled throughout the first half of the movie, even at the bits not meant to be funny. It's a movie that will often go right over kids' heads, but still delight and entertain and frighten them. What Pixar has done with Inside Out is every bit as bold as Wall-E or Up. What separates Pixar from the herd isn't its animation. Drooling over visuals only gets us so far, and the returns are dwindling now that just about every major cartoon studio out there is churning out incredible looking movies each year. And the corridors of Long Term Memory are fascinating but not really jaw-dropping. In many ways, both its vistas and its characters are simpler than the last few films. Inside Out is never the revolutionary visual spectacle that so many of Pixar's films have been in the past. Of course, Inside Out is also a gorgeous film, though perhaps commenting on the lovely computer animated graphics is less important now than it was when Toy Story first came out, or when later Ratatouille seemed so much more lovely than anything we'd seen before, or my goodness the hairs on Sulley in Monster's Inc. A perfect companion to the rest of our feelings.

We feel sad at times, but we come away knowing that this sadness is alright. The most emotional moments-and I got plenty teary-eyed at these-are followed quickly by some comic relief, recurring joke, or other hilarious scene. The pacing is impeccable, never lingering too long on downer bits, but never rushing them along either.

It manages to be so emotionally poignant and real without ever sinking into cloying or sappy. Richard Kind plays a lively imaginary friend, whose final scene is among the already moving film's most touching moments.Īnd this is where Inside Out truly shines. Paula Poundstone and Bobby Moynihan as "Forgetters." Even Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers makes an appearance. Frank Oz (the voice of Yoda, among many others) as one of the guards of the Subconscious. Joy is the story's main protagonist, but it's her conflict with Sadness, and their adventures together and with many other zany companions inside Riley's long-term memory, Imagination-land, and land of the forgotten that make up the core of the film's action and message. Yes, over half these characters are played by actors from Parks and Recreation and The Office (Rashida Jones even has a voice-cameo.) Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) may be the central figure in this story, but she's a bit-part compared to Joy (Amy Poehler,) Sadness (Phyllis Smith,) Fear (Bill Hader,) Anger (Lewis Black,) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling.) Of course, Inside Out tells most of this story not from the child's eyes but from her five primary emotions' perspective.
